SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MALARIA

Maleria is a commonly seen infectious disease caused by Malerial parasites which are transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes through blood. A protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium and the related species as a group forms the Melerial parasites. Maleria has been leading to deaths of many. There are various symptoms like moderate or severe shaking chills, high fever, profuse sweating as body temperature falls, general feeling of unease and discomfort (malaise) along with headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Details and information on each symptom are given below.

Moderate or severe shaking chills

Shaking chills with fever is the first symptom of Maleria. It can be either moderate or severe.

High Fever

In the initial stages of the disease, there may be frequent attacks of fever. But, as the disease progresses fever becomes uniform. In P. falciparum malaria, multiple spikes may continue.

Profuse sweating as body temperature falls

There may be fever, shaking chills in the beginning but as the temperature falls, the infected person tends to sweat profusely lasting four to six hours.

General feeling of unease and discomfort (malaise)

Malaise is the first indication of an infection or disease which is a feeling of unease and discomfort or an ‘out of sorts’ feeling.

Headache

Headache can be with or without fever. It may be like intra-cranial infections or intra-cranial space occupying lesions, sinusitis or migraine.

Nausea

Nausea is an uneasy sensation and discomfort in the stomach which urges you to vomit.

Vomiting

It can be due to high fever or even drugs which may pose difficulty in administering antiMalerial treatment.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a condition in which the infected person has frequent watery, loose bowel movements.

Maleria can also cause liver and kidney failure. There are no vaccines which are available to prevent Maleria.
